VUVUSELA - THE SOUTH AFRICAN ALPINE HORN

Tens of thousands of Vuvuzela were sold at Expo WP over several months prior to the Soccer World Cup in South Africa, especially at the night market. Hence, hundreds of thousands of soccer fans and spectators  religiously take their vuvuzelas along whenever they go watch their favorite soccer team play. But this may not be for long, because the annoying sound of the vuvuzela may be lost from South African soccer grounds forever if the PSL management so decide. This is not because because of the incessant drowning wall of noise which made the vuvuzela so unpopular with global audiences during the 2010 World Cup but rather because of the security threat they may present.

The globally famous vuvuzela - the Alpine horn from South Africa
Premier Soccer League (PSL) officials mentioned that although they are not intending to pursue banning the vuvuzela, it has become a matter of concern after a bout in incidents where the vuvuzela was used to cause alleged injury. Premier Soccer League (PSL) general manager Derek Blanckensee said "Our rules ban all dangerous weapons from matches,"  "If the vuvuzela is to become a dangerous weapon then we will look into this."

Vuvuzelas are made of lightweight plastic and seems very incapable of causing grievous bodily harm but it may be a way to rid soccer of the all too familiar sound of the vuvuzela. Vuvuzela bashing has taken on a new form since vuvuzelas were among a number of objects like cooldrink cans, plastic bottles and fruit thrown at Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa after his side were held to a draw by AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium earlier this year. Not long thereafter a supporter, who took offence at a red-card decision against his team, charged on the pitch and attempted to strike the referee with the plastic instrument during a league match between Lamontville Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs in Durban. Kaizer Chiefs is South Africa's most popular soccer club and they have been chasing after a first league title for the past eight years.

British and South African soccer fans competing in noise production with their vuvuselas.
On a different occasion,  another Chiefs supporter,  was apprehended after he too ran onto the soccer field. Both these spectators were arrested and released on R500 ($55) bail. These abnormal incidents have not only called  the level of security at PSL games into question but also the future of the world famous  vuvuzela which remains popular with most local fans. PSL officials are wary of a possible backlash should they ban the vuvusela and not permit them to be brought to soccer matches.  The vuvusela quickly became popular with international soccer fans, especially Brazillians and Englishmen who bought then to take back to the Britain. It is very unfortunate that several countries have already banned the vuvuzela since fans attempted to bring it into stadiums and setup a wall of noise.

Photojani Photographic studios at EXPO WP have more than a 1000 photographs on show of the Soccer World Cup and vuvuselas in general and this is just a sample.

LUNCH AT EXPO WESTERN CAPE, EX - EXPO WP

Crayfish Curry is one of Cape Town's delectable meals, better known locally as Kreef Kerrie and is one of the most desirable seafood in the Cape. It's been the staple diet of subsistence fisherman and the lower income groups along the coastal regions of  South African for scores of years. However, today Crayfish has become a sort after commodity and fetch huge prices in restaurants. It is recognized as a international delicacy and eaten in several countries that don't have Crayfish in their waters and even in inland countries without seas.  Crayfish curry was extremely popular at EXPO WP and many many families flocked over weekends to have  Crayfish for lunch at Expo Western Cape, served with savoury white rice. The locals call it "gesmoored rys". Essentially braised rice flavoured with cardamon, cinnamon sticks and butter.  This meal isn't only mouth watering but also taste bud tantalizing.

A delectable pot of tangy Crayfish Curry.
South Africa exports the bulk of its Crayfish which the government calls "Red Gold". France as a country has been buying live Crayfish from South Africa for years, to be bred in the seas locally. Spain and Portugal and Japan are huge on South African sea products especially long line hake, tunny, albacore, abellone (perlemoen) and last but not least Crayfish. But these exports and GDP comes at the detriment of the South African population, because we have government legislated catch restriction and size restrictions. Contravening these regulations are punishable by law, however if and when we do acquire a few crayfish, we turn it into a feast.

Succulent Crayfish tails in a tangy spicy gravy on a bed of "gesmoorde" rice.
Ever since the price of Crayfish has gone through the roof, Crayfish tail curry has become very popular at Weddings, which gives it a stamp of affluence. Crayfish can be prepared in various ways. A favorite is to cut off its tail, slice it open lengthwise, remove its intestinal tract, wash it in cold water and cover it with garlic butter, salt and ground pepper then grill it. Crayfish goes very well in a seafood potjiekos and is very popular with campers. Crayfish tails can also be grilled over an open flame. Crayfish is best cooked in salt water or seawater and eaten with salads with a dash of lemon and some "corn on the cob".

There are several other ways to prepare crayfish but Crayfish Curry is unique to Cape Town. The larger Crayfish has thick legs filled with the same flesh as is in the tails. A typical family South African eating Crayfish simply enjoys cracking the legs with their teeth to remove and eat the delicious flesh inside. Crayfish are seasonal are abundant here in South, along both our Atlantic coast as well as in False Bay - Indian Ocean during catch season. Many, many tourists flock to our local restaurants during this period to sample the cuisine from our seas.

Should you be interested in making your own Crayfish Curry, you can get the recipe at Foods of the Cape. But is you interested in making some QUICK CASH, check this out.

CORN IN A CUP GOES MOBILE - EX EXPO WP

Its been two years since EXPO WP officially closed its doors but that was certainly not the end of business for the 300 stalls holders who operated under one roof at the EXPO. No siree...., Quanita's hairdresser relocated and is running a thriving business, Photo Jani Photographic Studio relocated an is inundated with Wedding Photography inquiries, Miller's Corn the "Corn in a Cup" people relocated and diversified, Burger World relocated and expanded, in fact virtually everyone who ran a business from the EXPO relocated and are doing way better than they did whilst at the EXPO.

Miller's  cup corn or rather corn cups is one of the businesses that started out at EXPO Western Province and has subsequently adopted a new business model. Miller's corn in a cup made all there vendors mobile - a cart with  canopy. It is really an amazing idea almost as wonderful as their cups of corn. Corn is food for food lovers.  Have a look at the photograph below and your will see what i mean. The concept comes from Malaysia and the franchise company Nelson's is internationally renown for corn in a cup and is established in more than 15 counties.

Miller's Corn-in-a-Cup is an anytime, anywhere snack enjoyed at soccer, cricket or rugby.

Expowp.blogspot.com is situated in kapstadt and is run by Photo Jani photographic Studios who has taken hundreds of photographs of  the 7de laan celebs amongst which are fotos of San Mari aka Amalia Uys and Heino Schmitt in underwear but not pics of Altus de Bruyn naked.
